WASHINGTON (AP) - A federal judge ruled Friday that an alleged sexually transmitted disease drug that contains the anti-inflammatory drug, Viagra, is not a safe and effective treatment for impotence.
The case was brought by men who developed erectile dysfunction after taking an injection of the drug into the penis after sexual intercourse. It was a rare development, but it did occur. The drug is sold under the brand name Viagra.
The Food and Drug Administration, the agency's medical watchdog, approved the drug in the U. S. on Aug. 16, 1998. The drug is sold under the brand name Sildenafil Citrate and is marketed under the brand name Revatio.
Since the drug was discovered, it has helped women in the bedroom. The drug is sold as the "little blue pill," which is still on the market today.
Viagra is not a medicine for erectile dysfunction. It is a prescription drug for men with erectile dysfunction.

Viagra is sold under the brand name Sildenafil and is marketed as Revatio. The FDA said in a press release that it was "taking into account an increased risk of heart attack and stroke and a possible increased risk of developing diabetes, which is a major risk of heart disease."
Balsam said he did not believe that Viagra was a safe drug for use in the U. and that the FDA's approval of the drug did not result in any negative side effects.
"It is a very important drug for the public health," said Rea. "This is a very important drug for the medical community to be able to put a stop to."
The FDA said in a statement that it had not determined "whether the FDA's approval of Viagra or Sildenafil is an adequate and safe alternative to that recommended."
The drug's label does not tell doctors that it works for erectile dysfunction. However, the drug can cause "life threatening and potentially fatal side effects," said the FDA's medical advisory board.
Balsam said the FDA did not know whether or not the drug was safe for use in the United States. "The FDA has not made any findings on the safety of this drug in the United States," he said.
Viagra, which was developed by Pfizer in the 1950s, is the brand name for Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
The drug was approved for use in patients with erectile dysfunction by the FDA in 1998.
Balsam said that the drug can be harmful to the liver and that he had seen "some cases of liver damage" with the drug in the past.
